WANDRIAN 101--introducing our classic vessel!

Our boat, M/V WANDRIAN (M/V=Motor Vessel) is a 1962 American Marine Chanteyman 35 foot trawler yacht, built by hand in American Marine's Hong Kong yard on Junk Bay, their first production vessels and the world's first trawler yachts!  Hong Kong was a British Crown Colony at that time. She was designed by the famous American designer team of Angleman and Davies in Los Angeles, most famous for Sea Witch sailboats. WANDRIAN is a wood boat with a hull built of 1" mahogany planks fastened with copper rivets to 1-3/4" square Ipoh frames on 10" centers.

American Marine went on in 1965 to produce the very well known line of wood Grand Banks trawler yachts until 1974 when they moved their operations to Singapore and Malaysia and began building their boats in fiberglass. Grand Banks has dealers all over the world and is still going very strong in sales today!

POWER--
The boat originally had a 98 HP Ford Osco diesel engine, which was replaced by a Bedford (British) 165 HP diesel engine over 40 years ago.  Shortly after our purchase of the boat in June 2005, the Bedford engine failed catastrophically.  Parts to overhaul the Bedford were not available so we purchased a new John Deere 4045TFM70 4 cylinder 135 HP turbodiesel electronic engine and it was installed over an 18 month period along with a complete replacement of all systems in the boat--electrical wiring & panels, hydraulic steering, fuel system, electronics, toilet and much more.  We've updated almost everything in the boat.  In 2013, the hull and deckhouse were repainted and all the exterior brightwork was stripped and 3 coats of varnish applied with more to come.  She looks great!

OLYMPIA YACHT CLUB--
We are members of Olympia Yacht Club, founded in 1904, located in downtown Olympia, WA, the state capitol. Olympia is the southernmost part of Puget Sound.  WANDRIAN is housed in its own boathouse at Olympia Yacht Club, which protects the boat and its brightwork from the elements.

WANDRIAN'S VITAL STATISTICS--
Hull #9 of 36 Chanteyman yachts built between 1961-1964.
Overall Length--37.5 feet , Beam--12' 9", Draft-- 3.5', Displacement--36,000 pounds.
Tankage--375 gallons diesel, 250 gallons fresh water.  7 knots cruising speed; fuel sufficient to cruise 800+ nautical miles--from Olympia to Ketchikan, Alaska!

WANDRIAN'S CRUISING GROUNDS--
We've cruised WANDRIAN all over Puget Sound, the large body of water from Olympia in the south to Bellingham and Port Townsend in the north with Seattle in the middle. The Salish Sea is a recent name for all the waters in southern British Columbia (B.C.) and Puget Sound.  We've visited many areas of B.C. including Victoria, the provincial capital, and Vancouver, the largest city in the province as well as many other ports on Vancouver Island and the B.C. mainland.  In 2010 we began a cruise to SE Alaska with a group but dropped out at the first ocean crossing, Queen Charlotte Strait and spent several more weeks in the Broughton Islands.  In 2011, we went north with a 36' Grand Banks yacht, safely made the two ocean crossings to Ketchikan, Alaska and stayed together to Sitka, Alaska where the other boat went across the Gulf of Alaska to Whittier, his home port near Anchorage.  We went on to Juneau and Glacier Bay National Park and returned by ourselves to Olympia, our home port, after a 99 day voyage that was the trip of a lifetime!

We usually attend the Puget Sound Grand Banks Owners Association (PSGBOA) Rendezvous in Roche Harbor on San Juan Island, WA in May and in 2013 we were awarded a certificate as the "Oldest Grand Banks Yacht in the Northwest!"   We also exhibit WANDRIAN in the famous Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival (WBF), the weekend after Labor Day.  As we write this, we are docked in Gig Harbor coming home from a very busy 2014 WBF with what appeared to be record attendance and over 200 wood boats on exhibit up to 150' in length!  It's the largest wooden boat event in the world!  In another post, we'll tell you more!
